Abdomen Treatment Options
The abdomen is a complex area of the human body with major organs, nerves, epidermis, fat pockets, and muscles. Before any treatment can be applied to the abdomen, a surgeon must comprehensively evaluate a patient’s unique physiology. Then the doctor can discuss available abdomen treatment options for remedying any issues.
One of the most common issues that patients request treatment for is skin discoloration and laxity. This can result from exposure to the sun, distention due to childbirth, or weight gain and loss. The surgeons at Jacobson and Mardirossian Plastic Surgery Center for Excellence are experts at treating these conditions with Spot Peels, Q Laser or Fraxel with outstanding results. We also utilize the “RF” skin tightening technology to produce mini-tucks.
A very popular abdomen treatment option is liposuction which removes unwanted fatty tissue. Our surgeons will conduct a thorough analysis of the fat deposits and underlying muscle. If there is good muscle tone, a liposuction is a viable treatment option. In some cases, a liposuction is enough to reveal a “six-pack” stomach, but in others, it may be advisable to have the surgeon recontour the abdomen into a more pleasing appearance. Liposuction can be completed under twilight sleep, without the need for full anesthesia. A bandage must be worn for a day, but most patients return to their usual routine within a few days. In most cases, there is an immediate change, but it may take up to six or nine months for results to conclusively appear. For select patients who are past their final childbirth, we also offer the laser-based smart lipo procedure.
The tummy tuck or abdominalplasty is a commonly requested procedure, especially among women who have had children recently or experienced significant weight changes. When these physiological changes occur, the muscles of the abdomen may bow out and stretch. Exercise is unlikely to rectify this because these muscles are inelastic and cannot be re-toned. The tummy tuck involves the removal of excess skin and fat along with a recontouring of the waist. At the same time, the muscles in the abdominal wall are tightened using surgical sutures. Two drains may also be placed to allow for removal of fluid. The navel may be repositioned to create a more natural appearance.
The tummy tuck is one of our more popular abdomen treatment options because it can be performed in our offices while under twilight sleep and most patients can start walking around the next day. Our specialized technique allows our patients to achieve full mobility in days rather than weeks. Our procedure typically produces significantly less pain, but we also provide a pain pump for patients who may experience unusual discomfort.
There are many types of abdominalplasty, some more invasive than others. If you wish to learn more about your abdomen treatment options, please visit the Jacobson and Mardirossian Plastic Surgery Center for Excellence website or call (561) 624-0900.
