The chin is an important facial feature that contributes significantly to the shape and balance of the face. While some patients may benefit from a reduction in the chin, others seek to elongate their face through a chin implant. A chin augmentation (or reduction) is a simple procedure that Dr. Vartan Mardirossian can utilize to enhance the aesthetic of your face.
The chin enhancement begins with the surgeon making a small incision in the mouth, just beneath the lower lip. Alternatively, the incision can be placed in a skin crease just below the chin. If the patient requires a reduction, the surgeon will gently contour the chin bone to achieve the desired shape. If the soft tissue must also be modified, Dr Mardirossian may introduce sutures to help secure the tissue in the desired position.
If the patient desires an augmentation, a dedicated chin implant inserted in an anatomical and aesthetically pleasing position. These implants are made of solid silicone and are available in various sizes. The incision is closed using absorbable sutures. Some swelling and discomfort may persist for up to two weeks. Patients with oral incision will need to use an antibiotic mouthwash for at least a week following the procedure. The patients who had a skin incision under the chin will benefit from an antibiotic ointment placed regularly for about 6-7 days.
