FDA-approved Medical Treatments for Hair Loss

The medical treatments can revert hairs from the resting phase into an active growth phase. Medical treatments produce an increase in hair density, hair volume, and reduction of hair loss. They cannot revive a hair follicle that has already been lost. Cessation of the medical treatment will generally revert its effects. We usually recommend a combination of all medical treatments to yield the best possible result.

  • Finasteride (Propecia)
  • Minoxidil (Rogaine)
  • Low-level laser therapy (LLLT)

At our practice, every patient is carefully evaluated in order to elaborate the best and safest possible plan for work-up and treatment. Further diagnostic testing such as workup for anemia, thyroid function and autoimmune disease may be deemed necessary prior to embarking into a treatment plan. There are only two FDA-approved medications currently for male hair loss: Finasteride (an oral medication) and Minoxidil (a topical cream applied to the scalp), while only Minoxidil is approved for female hair loss.

Finasteride (Propecia R)

is used only in men and has the benefit of increasing the density of hair in the hairline, forelock, temporal and crown region. It takes about 6 months to build up a visible effect and it takes the same time for hair to reverse to its starting point once it is stopped. About 2% of men experience decreased libido with this medication, which resolves in half of the cases while continuing to take the medication.

Minoxidil (Rogaine R)

was originally used as a systemic drug for the treatment of high blood pressure. The medication was discovered to lead to a more prolonged active growth phase for hairs. Early on during the treatment some patients may experience temporarily increased hair shedding. New hair growth can be expected 3-4 months after beginning the treatment.

Low-level Laser Therapy

works by photostimulation of the hair follicle by cold red laser light. It is available in the form of hats, combs or helmets. Usually, it is recommended three times weekly for about 30 minutes. An improvement in hair count is noticed over 6 months of regular use.
