Otoplasty – Ear Recontouring Procedure
The otoplasty procedure can be performed in the doctor’s office under local anesthesia or IV sedation. A tiny incision is made in one of the creases behind the ear. The cartilage in the ear structure is repositioned and sutured to produce the desired shape or a position nearer to the head. The incision is then sealed with hidden sutures, leaving a virtually invisible scar.
Following an otoplasty procedure, the patient should wear a surgical dressing which provides protection and compression for 3 to 4 days. There may be some mild discomfort, but the risks for this procedure are otherwise minimal. To further reduce the possibility of infection, an antibiotic ointment should be applied to the incision area during the recovery period.
