Chin Augmentation
in McLean, VA

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase the projection of the chin. We offer it to patients in Virginia including McLean, Falls Church, Tysons, Arlington plus the Washington DC area. It is performed by Dr. Vartan Mardirossian at the Mardirossian Facial Aesthetics fully licensed surgical suite in McLean, VA.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is an increase in the projection of the chin to achieve a slimmer and more delicate lower jaw. When the chin is too small (under-projected), it can negatively affect the harmonious appearance of the face, especially in profile.

Interestingly, the shape of the chin is related to nose size. A small chin may make a large nose more noticeable, and vice versa. Chin augmentation can be achieved by placement of a pre-made or custom-made silicone chin implant. Another method entails the advancement of the chin bone, also known as sliding genioplasty (discussed in further detail below).

Am I a Candidate for a Chin Augmentation?

Many patients who seek chin contouring have one (or more) of the following features:

  • An underdeveloped or broad chin
  • A prominent nose with an important projection of the nasal tip
  • Poor definition of the neck due to an under-projected chin

Sometimes chin augmentation surgery can be combined with rhinoplasty and/or a neck lift procedure, but it can be performed by itself. Facial implants can be inserted under IV sedation or with local anesthesia, though the mouth, or through a small incision under the chin.

During the consultation, Dr. Mardirossian will obtain a 3D CT images of your face in order to discuss the best option for you and to determine the best size and shape of chin implant that will best fit you.

How is Chin Augmentation Performed?

Chin implant placement can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures such as rhinoplasty or a facelift and neck lift. It can be performed under IV sedation or with local anesthesia.

The implant can be placed through an incision in the mouth or through a small incision under the chin. A small pocket is created right on the bone and the implant is positioned properly. Dr. Mardirossian will ensure its symmetrical placement with measurements and with the use of anatomical landmarks.

Then, he fixes the implant to the underlying bone with one or two tiny titanium screws. The incision is then closed by layers. The sutures used in the mouth are self-absorbing, while the sutures used on the skin are removed after seven days.

How Does Chin Augmentation Complement Rhinoplasty and Neck Lifts?

One procedure that can be naturally combined with chin augmentation is rhinoplasty, as a chin augmentation will decrease the relative projection of the nasal tip for a more harmonious face. When combined with a neck lift procedure, chin augmentation will improve the definition of the neck and the jawline for individuals with small chin or under-projected chin.

A chin augmentation can also be performed in the context of a mandible contouring whenever the patient does not want the placement of titanium hardware, typical of the sliding genioplasty procedure.

What is the Difference Between Chin Augmentation and Chin Advancement with Sliding Genioplasty?

Chin augmentation with the chin implant by itself is a procedure that can be performed in local anesthesia and nerve blocks. The implant is made of silicone that does not integrate with the surrounding tissues and is encapsulated by the soft tissue and later by the bone.

The silicone implant can be removed easily under local anesthesia if no longer desire, which is why we rely on silicone implants for chin augmentation. During the sliding genioplasty, cuts are performed in the chin bone that allows for its placement. Bone fragments are then fixed in a more projected position with an ultimate advancement of the chin bone.

What is Recovery Like After Chin Augmentation?

Swelling generally lasts one to two weeks. You may be advised to use ice for three to seven days following your procedure to allow for proper wound healing. An antibiotic mouthwash will be advised for two weeks if the incision is in the mouth. Patients who had a skin incision under the chin will benefit from an antibiotic ointment placed regularly for about six or seven days.

Before you leave, you will be given instructions on when to follow up and how to properly care for the incision sites. Most of our patients go back to their everyday activities three to four days after the procedure. Strenuous physical activity can be resumed after two to three weeks.

How Long Will My Chin Augmentation Results Last?

Chin implants are permanent, but they can be easily removed if no longer desired. Once removed, the bone will grow around the chin implant to encapsulate it.
