Mandible Angle Facial Implants in McLean, VA

Are you a  patient who desires a better-contoured chin and mandible angle (jaw angle)? Facial implants placement is a procedure for patients in Virginia including McLean, Falls Church, Tysons, Arlington plus the Washington DC area. It is performed by Dr. Vartan Mardirossian at the Mardirossian Facial Aesthetics fully licensed surgical suite in McLean, VA.

What is a Facial Implant and What Types are there?

Alloplastic materials in facial surgery have been used successfully for various applications in the reconstructive restoration or aesthetic augmentation of the facial skeleton. Depending on what implant is used, the implants are placed through a small incision in the mouth and lie directly on the cheekbone or on the jawbone. There are also implants that are inserted through a small incision on the inside of the eyelid meant to correct volume loss of the cheeks immediately under the eyes. Once they are placed they are covered by all the soft tissue of the face. Their appearance is naturally prominent and beautiful. The correct aesthetic position of the implants is maintained by placing tiny titanium screws (usually one or two per implant) that fix them to the underlying bone to prevent migration. The implants we currently use are:

  • Cheek implants
  • Chin implants
  • Mandible angle (jaw angle) implants
  • Nasojugal implants
  • Temporal implants

Am I a Candidate for Facial Implants?

If you feel that you have lost volume in your cheeks, jaw angle, chin or other parts of your face, then you are probably a candidate for facial implants. During the consultation, Dr. Mardirossian will recommend the best type, shape, and size implant to improve your facial aesthetics. Many times, a special CT scan is performed to decide which implant will be best suited for you.

What are the Benefits of Facial Implants?

The facial implants enhance the attractiveness of the face in several unique ways:

  1. They improve the contour and increase the volume of the facial sub-unit where they are placed at the same time. This is better than what fillers can accomplish because fillers increase volume but do not improve the contour.
  2. They can reliably and predictably change the contour of your face to achieve your goals.
  3. They are permanent but, if necessary, they can be easily removed under local anesthesia.
  4. They are made of semisolid silicone that does not leak.

Patient Reviews

“After years and years of facial fillers, I can finally put to rest any future physical or financial pain related to sculpting and shaping my lips. Knowing Dr. Mardirossian’s extensive experience and skillfulness with facial implants, I embraced the idea of placing an upper lip implant that would end the dreaded filler fatigue I had come to know.Under local anesthesia, the entire procedure didn’t take more then 15 minutes. The transformation was immediate and striking. The shape and fullness looked natural and complimented my lower lip.I had no pain and experienced minimal swelling for 2 days.I have to make an effort to actually feel the implant and have not experienced one downside. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner!”

How Are the Facial Implants Placed?

Depending on the type of implant used, the incision will be placed in a different area of the mouth, the eyelid or the scalp. Please refer to the cheek augmentation page for further information on that particular type of implant. For chin and jaw angle implants, the incisions are placed inside the mouth along the lower teeth and gum. The chin implant is introduced through a small midline incision in front of the lower inferior teeth and placed directly on the chin bone, then fixed in place with titanium mini screws. The jaw angle implants are introduced directly on the bone of the jaw angle and then are fixed down to it with a small titanium screw to avoid any migration. Strict sterile technique and antibiotic solutions are used before and during the operation to decrease the risk of infection. The gum incisions are then closed by layers with absorbable suture material. The nasojugal implants, that add volume to the anterior cheek, can be placed through hidden incisions inside the lower eyelid, while the temporal implants are placed through an incision hidden in the hair.

Despite being performed through a fine hidden incision, facial implants placement involves manipulation of deep tissues near your eye, some important blood vessels, and the nerves that move your face and collect sensation from its various areas. To avoid unnecessary risks, make sure you trust your face to an expert in the field like Dr. Mardirossian when considering this procedure.

How Long Will My Facial Implants Last?

The facial implants are permanent; however at the same time, they can be easily removed under local anesthesia whenever necessary.

What is Recovery Like After Facial Implants Placement?

Swelling after facial implants placement generally lasts one to two weeks. You may be advised to use ice for three to seven days following your procedure to allow for proper wound healing. Antibiotic mouth wash is important for two weeks post-operatively. Before you leave, you will be given instructions on when to follow up and how to properly care for the incision sites. Most of our patients go back to their everyday activities three to four days after the procedure. Strenuous physical activity can be resumed after three weeks.
