FFS Surgery Recovery

If you are considering facial feminization surgery (FFS), there are many things to think about. While you are preparing for your surgery, it is important to take the time to learn more about your recovery and what you should expect. No one’s surgery and recovery are the same as another’s, so understanding the different factors can go a long way toward easing your mind.

Familiarize Yourself with Your Procedures

Before you can truly begin to prepare for your recovery, it is first important to familiarize yourself with each individual procedure that Dr. Mardirossian will perform during your surgery. Perhaps you are just having surgery on your nose and your jaw, or maybe you will have procedures to feminize your forehead, hairline, brows, chin, lips,  and cheekbones. Different procedures have different recovery times, so understanding which ones you will have is important to planning your aftercare.

What to Expect After FFS Surgery?

Most patients go home the same day of their surgery, though a few – especially those who have extensive work – may stay overnight for observation. Most patients will need full-time bedrest for the first night, but this can vary depending on your body’s response to the surgery and the extent of your procedures. We encourage our patients to walk actively already on the day after surgery. You should not lift anything more than five pounds for about two weeks post-surgery, and you should plan to be off work for anywhere from two to four weeks, depending upon the extent of the surgery.

You may experience some pain and discomfort after your surgery, but Dr. Mardirossian will work very closely with you to help keep that pain and discomfort under control. Bruising and swelling will become more noticeable in the first few days after your surgery, as well, and it may take several weeks before the swelling completely disappears. Many patients are not prepared for this swelling and they feel rather shocked when they remove their bandages, so be sure that you understand that it can take weeks and sometimes months to really see the end result of your surgery.

Follow-Ups and Self Care

Before you go home, Dr. Mardirossian will speak with you about at-home care and self-care. You will learn how often to change your dressings, what type of medication you can take for your pain and swelling, and what sorts of activities you should avoid – and for how long. Dr. Mardirossian will also answer any questions you might have about your recovery. You will return to the office a few days to a week after your procedure for a follow-up. During this time, the team will check your sutures and assess your healing, all while looking for any signs of infection or other problems. You will return for another follow-up two weeks to a month later; everyone’s schedule is different depending on the procedures they have.

Facial feminization is a huge step in any woman’s journey, and it’s one that requires a great deal of preparation.
