Lower Blepharoplasty (Lower Eyelid Surgery)
in McLean, VA
Lower blepharoplasty is a procedure that benefits patients who desire a slim, clean outline to their lower eyelids in Virginia including McLean, Falls Church, Tysons, Arlington plus the Washington DC area. It is performed by Dr. Vartan Mardirossian at the Mardirossian Facial Aesthetics fully licensed surgical suite in McLean, VA.
What is Lower Blepharoplasty?
Lower blepharoplasty is the removal of the redundant fat and skin from the lower eyelids. The lower eyelids may accumulate excess skin and manifest fat pockets and protrusion as the years pass by. In some individuals, this naturally occurring phenomenon related to aging can create a tired and sad appearance. It is important to evaluate the lower eyelids carefully, as their tissue redundancy may reflect an overall loosening of the eyelid tendons and muscle as well as skin and fat redundancy.

How is Lower Blepharoplasty Performed?
This procedure can be performed either under local anesthesia or under twilight sleep. It can often be performed in combination with other procedures such as facelift and neck lift. There are many options for lower blepharoplasty depending on what the issue is. In all of them, the incision should be planned to allow the final closure to fall in a natural crease of the lower eyelid, just under the eyelash line.
If redundant skin is the problem, the excess skin is removed and the wound is closed. Alternatively, if there is also fat redundancy and muscle sagging, the skin and muscle layers are incised and the excess fat from the fat compartments under the eye is reduced. The undereye fat can also be moved to fill the areas of deep tear trough creases to effectively use it as a natural filler. The eyelid and the muscle of the lower eyelid are then tightened and the wound is closed by excising the redundant skin.
Patient Reviews
“Have had fillers from many plastic surgeons, but when I finally decided to have face lift and lower eyelid surgery, I chose Dr. M. From my first visit I felt comfortable and unique as a patient. Dr. M listened to my objectives and concerns before, the morning of, and after the surgery. Best of all, just 10 days post surgery, I am already happy with the results!”
– Jules M.
If performed correctly, there is minimal bleeding throughout the procedure. The wound is then closed with self-absorbing sutures that do not need to be removed. Despite being performed through a fine hidden incision, lower blepharoplasty involves manipulation of deep tissues near your eye. To avoid unnecessary risks, make sure you trust your face to an expert in the field like Dr. Mardirossian when considering this procedure.
There are also other lower eyelid procedures performed by Dr. Mardirossian that allow him to correct aesthetic problems with no skin incisions and/or to lift sagging cheek tissue in conjunction with a lower blepharoplasty for a more youthful and naturally refreshed look.
What is Recovery Like After Lower Blepharoplasty?
Swelling generally lasts one to two weeks. You may be advised to use ice for three to seven days following your procedure to allow for proper wound healing. Before you leave, you will be given instructions on when to follow up and how to properly care for the incision sites. Most of our patients go back to their everyday activities three to four days after the procedure. Strenuous physical activity can be resumed after two to three weeks.
How Long Will My Lower Blepharoplasty Results Last?
Once the excess lower eyelid skin and fat are removed, they do not come back; therefore, the results are permanent. Patients find this procedure appealing because of its positive effect on their vision and the decreased sensation of fatigue that many experience prior to the procedure.
