What is an Otoplasty Procedure?

Many individuals suffer from outer ear deformities. These occurrences could be due to burns, accidents, injuries or even just birth defects. However, the good news is individuals who suffer from outer ear deformities now have options that can help. Any medical procedure that refers to the re-contouring or reshaping of the outer ear is known as Otoplasty.

How can an otoplasty procedure help?

The otoplasty procedure has helped individuals regain their desired appearance and beauty. This procedure re-contours or reshapes the ear into a more aesthetically pleasing form. This is an extremely common procedure and is popular among both men and women.

How is an otoplasty procedure performed?

Otoplasty procedures are minor and are considered in-office procedures that can be completed and treated in a day’s time. Otoplasty procedures can also be performed under local anesthesia. The surgical process itself is fairly simple for an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon. First, a small incision is made in one of the creases behind the ear. Then, the cartilage in the ear structure is repositioned and reshaped to the desired shape or a position of the patient as well as in a position that is both aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical to the head and face. The incision is then sealed with hidden sutures, leaving a virtually invisible scar.

What is expected after an otoplasty procedure?

After an otoplasty procedure, patients are encouraged to wear a surgical dressing which provides protection and compression for approximately three to four day. While the level of pain and discomfort is minimal, some is normal. All other risks and side effects are also minimal. Some pain and swelling is also normal. In order to reduce the possibility of infection, which is always a risk, individuals and otoplasty procedure patients should be diligent about applying an antibiotic ointment to the affected area during the recovery time.
